HDTV - Are you confused about what is right for you? Let us help you understand what the differences in types of HDTVs are, why what you may have heard is not exactly right and what you should be thinking about when you are considering buying an HDTV for the long term. The information below assumes you know what HDTV is and you are simply trying to find what HDTV is right for you.
Plasma HDTV
Plasma HDTVs are probably the most sought after HDTV simply because of how attractive they look - even when they are turned off! A Plasma HDTV has all sorts of other reasons why a consumer might want one in their home. They can be a thin as 3 inches, as large as 60 inches or more, they allow extremely wide viewing angles, reproduce HDTV in awe-inspiring clarity and can double a computer monitor. However, they have their limitations. A Plasma HDTV, while containing some of the latest technology available, does not reproduce the color black as well as a CRT Rear Projection HDTV or a DLP HDTV. Also, Plasma TVs have shorter life expectancies than other flat panels (30,000 - 60,000 hours) and are susceptible to "burn-in" although the average user can easily take a few steps to minimize the risk (such as lowering the contrast below 50% and avoiding static images from being displayed over prolonged periods). A Plasma HDTV also is expensive. While prices are coming down, they remain atop the list of expensive HDTVs. Unless your needs dictate a large, flat panel HDTV or money is not an issue we suggest you consider other technologies.
- Pros: Thin, make artistic statement in a home, great viewing angles, great picture
- Cons: Expensive, do not reproduce black perfectly, susceptible to burn in
